The god Cupid commonly displayed on Valentines Day cards was the son of Mars and Venus. Also called Eros his golden arrows incited the love of his targets and filled them with passion. Cupid was a celestial orb in the former sky. His arrows were plasma discharges which caused a reddish hue in whatever other orb he hit.
